Cabin Fever

First, I'm sorry if my last post was a little grumpy. I was upset since it was my last Daddy-Daughter weekend, but fear not--my dad and I are rescheduling for Daddy-Daughter Day Take 2! :) And on another positive note, I'm still alive! haha Seriously, I would never wish the flu on anyone, it's awful! But, my fever has broken, I'm fully medicated, and I even left the apartment today for the first time since Friday...Only to go to the doctor and grocery store, but progress is progress!

What I want to know is what do people do who don't have anything to do? Hm....I don't think that makes sense when I write it out. In more words, what do people that aren't students or people that don't have jobs or kids do all day? Yes, a couple of days off are always a nice treat to put your feet up and relax, to stay up late and sleep in, and veg out on the couch watching daytime TV....but what about when facebook gets boring and you've watched all of the reruns that you can stand? Believe me, boredom comes quickly. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to interacting with the rest of the world and being back on my feet in full force! I'm taking it slow because after bronchitis and now the flu, I'm listening to my body and taking it easy. But being sick has gotten old really fast. I think my body is ready for a healthy immune system and some spring weather to get over this cabin fever!!!

Something to look forward to (as long as my immune system allows me) is going to Knoxville this weekend to visit my sister!! :) Woohoo! Burger time!

My immune system hates me

Ugggghhhh. I don't want to be the complainer, but I have been in bed ALL day. My parents came in town last night because this weekend was my sorority's annual Daddy-Daughter weekend. I woke up yesterday coughing a little bit more than I had been (I went to the doctor about 2 weeks ago because I had been having coughing fits for 3 weeks to find out that I had bronchitis. He gave me antibiotics and cough suppresents and sent me on my way) and not feeling 100% but figured that the feeling would wear off as the day went on. Nope, it just got worse. I took a 2 hour nap before showering and laying around my sister's house all night. I toss and turn all night and woke up with a 101+ degree fever. So, rather than getting to enjoy the nice weather and baseball game with my dad, I have been cooped up in my room all day, eating dry toast, sipping on ginger ale, and dozing in and out of sleep. Not how I was planning on spending my weekend. :( I don't mean to be a Debby Downer, but since I have nothing else to do while I'm chained to my bed all day, I figured I could at least blog about my not-so-stellar immune system and its poor choice of timing since I should be enjoying the weekend with my daddy.

Back in the Habit

Even though it's Tuesday, I'm getting back in the habit of talking about my weekends, because who doesn't want to relive your days off? This past weekend was so wonderful! I rarely have a weekend that I will stay in Athens for the whole weekend, in fact, I think that this might be the second all semester!

For those of you that don't know Hannah Card, you should. :) She was a camper at CVP for a handful of years and was a counselor during the second term this past summer. She and I both have red hair, the same number of piercings (that makes us sound super punky...lol But when I say that, I mean that we both have our left cartilage pierced twice), and we had green Mountain Smith bags. Scotty Harwood would constantly call us the other's name and Hannah and I both had campers from each other's cabin's call us the wrong name. And so, Hannah and I came to call each other "Twin". We made a pact sometime around New Year's that we would see each other before St. Patrick's Day and this past weekend, we followed through! Hannah drove down from Montreat on Friday afternoon and I could not have been happier to see her! She and I caught up for an hour or two before getting some dinner at Mirko (yum!!!) After dinner, we went to a super cute, "Athens-y" place called "Two Story Coffeehouse". We sipped on some delicious lattes and most importantly had wonderful conversation! I was so grateful to sit and talk with such a great friend, reminiscing over camp stories, but even more special was knowing that our friendship goes past camp and we shared life experiences.
Saturday morning, we slept in, went to Panera for some delicious bagels. (After much debating, I was reminded by how good the Cinnacrunch bagel that Emily blogged about the day sounded when I read about it, so I decided to go with that--so thanks Emily and David for helping my indecisiveness!! ha!) Hannah had to go back to school soon after our trip to Panera, so I worked out and got ready for the rest of the afternoon. With a few friends, I went to a special exhibit called "Africa in Athens". It was such a wonderful experience that was put on by Athens Church and World Vision. Everyone has their own headset and you "become" a child in Africa that has been affected by AIDS. I "was" Emmanuel, a 3 year old boy, with an older brother, 6 year old Zachary. Our father died when I was just a baby and not long after the story began, my mother came down with an unknown illness. We couldn't afford to pay for her medication or proper nutrition, so we have to sell our belongings to get by. By the time Emmanuel is 6 years old, his mother dies from AIDS. The story then carries on to share the eye-opening statistics of how AIDS is spreading throughout Africa and what World Vision is doing to come alongside to help. It was a touching, out of the ordinary experience that really made me think about what I could do. And with that came the simple revelation-pray. I've never felt called for overseas misisons, but that does not mean that I ought to turn a blind eye to something that is effecting our world. Later that night, after chowing down on some Little Caeser's pizza, Kathryn and I went to see Confessions of a Shopaholic--super cute!

Sunday was a day of nothing and I LOVED it! After church, I become a vegetable and lounged and snacked all day until going to Sunday Night Dinner with some friends from Crossroads. It. Was. Wonderful. :) ahhh I love being lazy once and a while.

Worth listening to

One great thing (of the many, many things) that camp has opened my eyes to is GREAT music. Every summer I come back with a practically new mix of music on my iPod. This summer, Joe Brunk introduced me to Jimmy Needham. I love listening to Jimmy Needham, no matter what mood I'm in. His music is amazing and to make it even better, it speaks the Gospel so clearly, but not in a "churchy" way or cheesy, "poppy" Christian radio style. I discovered his first album, Speak this summer, thanks to Joe Brunk, and recently came across a second album of Jimmy Needham's, Not Without Love. I would highly reccommend spending a couple of dollars to buy either of these albums--Enjoy!

My NEW Bible :)

If any of you have been around when the past 2 or so months when I've had my Bible with me, you have heard me talk about how it's hanging by a thread. The spin has been loosely attached for a while now, but around Thanksgiving, the book of 1 Thessalonians through the index is not even apart of my Bible anymore. I still have them all, but they are like their own separate pamphlets now. haha I decided it was time to get a new Bible.

I think I've had the Bible since early high school, so it was well loved, written on with notes and verses underlined on nearly every page. I didn't want to give up my Bible because I was so comfortable with it. I started wondering if I was loving my Bible rather than the Bible itself. With that realization, and the fact that I've had a Student Bible when I won't be a student much longer was what tipped the scale for me to start looking for a new Bible.

My mom and I headed to Barnes and Noble (ahhhh, I LOVE spending time in bookstores :) on Saturday to peruse all of the Bibles. She wanted to buy me my new Bible for my Valentine's Day gift from she and my dad. We sat in the aisle for at least 30 minutes, if not more, flipping through the different Bibles on the shelves. I finally decided on a NIV Study Bible and I could not be more excited about it. I have had a renewed passion to get to know my new Bible, not because it's mine but because I've been reminded how precious it is that I had God's Word at my finger tips. I could not have imagined a better Valentine's Day gift :)

Because it's almost Friday

It's Thursday, so I figure everyone could use a good chuckle. This well-known Disturbia video is guaranteed to make you smile and laugh when you're feeling blue....not to mention you can pick up on some pretty sweet dance moves :)

Tired of being Lukewarm

I've gotten into a really great, new habit...well two good habits depending on how you look at it. But I have been listening to talks on my iPod from Passion 2 and 3 years ago while I've been working out. It has been so great 1. because I'll run or do the elliptical until the talk is over (which is usually 45-50 minutes) and 2. I get a great inspiration midweek from speakers like Louie Giglio and Francis Chan. I listened a talk by Francis Chan about...well, a ton but the overlaying theme was passionately loving God in a lukewarm church.

That got me thinking of what lukewarm really is...the first thing that came to mind was Starbuck's. Yes, Revelation 3:16 --So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.--made me think of Starbuck's. If you know me, you know how much I LOVE a good cup of white chocolate mocha from this wonderful coffee company. On average, I will go about once a week, unless it is around finals time and that number will at least triple. Starbuck's drive thru=best concept ever. Getting a steaming cup of delicious coffee; at the exact right drinking temperature, not too "coffee-y" or "syrup-y", but the perfect blend of each, and ahhhh that first sip is bliss. Depending on the occasion, depends on how quickly I can down a cup of coffee. Socially: slowly, enjoying each sip. Studying: well, if it's for a break from studying, slowly. If I'm sleepy and in need of caffeine, that coffee will be gone before you can say "Starbuck's". But when I'm drinking to enjoy, I always have to time my drinking just right. I do this because if you have ever reached the end of a cup of coffee at the wrong time, you would know why. All of the syrup settles to the bottle and what's left of the coffee is disgustingly lukewarm. When a cup of coffee that should be toasty warm is instead lukewarm, I totally see what this verse is talking about when they want to spit out.

Something that I have struggled with this semester has been that I've felt lukewarm. In my prayers, my worship, my quiet time, and everything in between, I haven't felt passionate. Yes, I care and I see the importance of each of these, but I've lacked an intimacy with God. So, something that I have been praying for specifically in my life, and I would love for you to pray alongside me, is that I can feel the passion for our God. The talk from Francis Chan was a simple reminder of loving God and his Word; not just the people that give the message or loving the music for the music, but loving it for the fact that we get to worship the maker of the universe and my best friend. I pray this for each of you, that you are not lukewarm but instead on fire in your worship and your quiet time with God.
