My Baptism

This is a post that I've been meaning to blog about for some time because I've never found the time to sit down and give it the time that I thought that something so important to me deserved. So, I figured I would celebrate my "6 month anniversary" of my baptism to tell all of you that weren't there about my special day. :)

Over Christmas break, I was looking through my journals from the past 3 years. I've made several attempts at journaling over the years, but never was consistent in it until I worked at camp. So when I came across my first completed journal, I was excited to see what God was teaching that year and what I was thinking or my reactions to stuff. What really caught my attention was that the first page of that journal was from the night that Bo Towns acted out a scene, reading through the book of Colossians. In bold, I wrote "I want to be baptized." I don't think it at all ironic that I wrote that during my first days at camp and that I was baptized this past summer at CVP. For those of you that weren't there, and for those that were, I wanted to recount how it all fell into place.

The first week of camp this past summer, I decided to stop fighting my pride and start talking about getting baptized. Since most of you have heard my testimony, I won't go into details, but as a recap; I accepted Jesus as my Savior in 7th grade, but the concept of a relationship with a God that loved me and a recognition of His presence in every aspect of my life did not sink in until my senior year of high school. Coming to college, it was easier to let people assume that I had been baptized because the longer I waited to get baptized, the easier it was to move on with life as always. Whenever people found out that I hadn't been baptized, they would usually say something along the lines of "Oh my gosh, really?!? That's crazy!" It was hardly ever, "Why not?" said with care because for so many Christians, getting baptized is "just what you do". But I didn't want to get baptized until I really understood the meaning behind it and to have a meaning in it for me.

This past summer at camp, during the first session of campers, I went to talk to Jerry about possibly baptizing me at camp. I had toyed with the idea before, but throughout staff training God continually laid it on my heart to follow through with the feeling and do something about it. Jerry said that he would talk to the camp committee, but he would love to do it when the time was right.

Fast forward to the end of the summer during the staff clean up week...Both of my parents were planning up coming to Soddy Daisy and I couldn't be more excited. I was finally going to follow through on my desire to be baptized and remain faithful to God's call for a believer's public declaration of faith among other believers.

The morning of my baptism, my mom called saying that she had been throwing up since 4 am and didn't think that she would be able to make it up to camp--I was sitting on a log in The Hole when Kasey and Anna saw me crying after I got off of the phone. They calmed me down, reassured me, and said all of the right things to help me through my tears. Then, my phone went psycho. That whole day, random numbers would dial repeatedly...without me ever touching the keys. My poor friends that were on my speed dial got quite a few phone calls that day! ha! So all the while, I was trying to get in touch with family and friends that were coming to camp. Oh did I mention it was raining all morning? Needless to say, I was a little stressed!

The staff did work projects as usual that morning, but we stopped earlier because the rain was stopping us from being too productive. Yet another glitch-first my mom being sick, then my crazy phone, and then the rain. I was starting to think that Satan was trying to stop me from ever getting baptized! My mom had made her way up to camp, still not feeling well but still there, and my dad met us in the middle from Oak Ridge. Mrs. Cleland even came out to camp to see me get baptized!

My whole baptism experience is something that I will never forget. It felt weird because I had to go "collect" everyone from their cleaning projects...All I thought of to say was "Hey, you can come see me get baptized now if you want to..." How do you tell people to come see you get baptized? ha! So, I walked down to the beach amongst the herd of people, holding Jessica Paulsen's hand, talking about how getting baptized is like a marriage (that conversation comes into play later). Once we all collected at the "beach" aka the sand box, I don't know who started singing, but before I knew it, everyone had joined in to sing "Down to the River to Pray". That's when I started crying...and couldn't stop! (Fortunately, Kasey and Alex helped me to stop crying enough...) I was just so overcome that I am so blessed to have such loving friends and family that were there to see me get baptized and support me in my faith.

Jerry and I stood in front of everyone of the boat ramp. It was mostly a blur, but I do know that Jerry read from Ephesians 4:1-6. {4:1As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. 2Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.} Jerry also, totally a God thing, talked about how a baptism is an outward expression of an inward change. That baptism serves as a symbol of my faith, much like a ring serves as a symbol in a marriage. (!! since Jessica and I had just talked about that!)

As Jerry and I walked away from the crowd into the water, the first thing Jerry says to me was "You know to plug your nose before I dunk you, right?" I kind of chuckled because I was not expecting for him to say that to me at all!! haha Afterwards, it was a blur of hugs, tears, and a feeling of joy. After years of hesitation, I followed through on God's word and I felt the difference in my heart.I'm super impressed if you made it all the way through this blog post!! It certainly took me a while to type up, so I'm sure it's taken you forever to read it! This was such a special event in my life and something that made a huge impact on my relationship with our great God. I am so grateful for those of you that were there and as equally as grateful for those that joined in prayer. I'm so glad that you were able to read this and share my experience!

I have the cutest niece--ever. Period.

As I told y'all yesterday, I would be putting up pictures of Charlotte since I babysat her today. Katie had to plan a last minute trip to the dentist, so Lil Miss came over to my apartment for a couple of hours to spend time with her Aunt Kristin. Here is a small sampling of the photo shoot that I had of Charlotte.

She's gotten really good at pulling herself up and she sure can crawl fast!! Next step: walking!
I really wanted a picture of us together, but she hasn't quite learned to smile on cue...so this was me, mid-picture, trying to make her giggle. The smile worked, too bad I wasn't ready--but I love this picture just the same.

On the move!! With a little bit of help....

Again, the problem of her smiling when I'm ready for a picture...One of these days!

So precious :) Words can't even begin to explain how much I love this little girl-she'll be 10 months old next week!! She's growing up so fast!

I really sad that I won't be able to see her nearly as much next year since I won't be in Athens anymore. But spending time with her and seeing Katie's transition from wife to mother has just grown my desire even more to be a mother...which granted, I know will be quite a few years away. But nevertheless, I have loved every minute that I get to spend with Charlotte and I am finding out the capacity of my heart to love someone so much that it hurts.

Another great weekend!

So this picture is just for the heck of it....Katie texted me this picture today to show off Charlotte's ability to have pigtails since her hair is getting so long--isn't my niece PRECIOUS?!?! I just love her so much-Such a stinking cutie. :)
I know I've been inconsistent about posting stuff, but I'm still getting back into the swing of things with school. All the same, here's what my weekend entailed! Friday afternoon, Kathryn, my roommate and best friend (don't worry Kasey, you're my best friend too :), loaded up my little Honda with me to go back to Marietta. We left early afternoon to avoid traffic, but mainly to get in some shopping time at the mall. haha After we made our way through the mall, we headed home to see mom and dad. We were treated to my favorite restaurant, Cherokee Cattle Company!! Just one steak was 16 ounces (!!!), so Kathryn and I split one which was still more than enough! I talked my parents into splitting a dessert so we dug into a yummy turtle cheesecake to finish off the meal. After dinner, my parents and Kathryn and I headed home to play with Kathryn's Wii for a few hours!! haha I think my parents are addicted...

Saturday morning, my dad woke me and Kathryn up around 7:00 so we could bundle up to run my church's annual 5K race. The money is raised to support our high school ministry and it's become a tradition for my dad and I to participate. I don't know how many 5K's I've done, but this was Kathryn's second one so it really exciting for her to run it with us! We ran most of the race, even with my bad knee and hip and the rain!! I know, we're hard core...
We eventually got cleaned up, did some more shopping and came back home to watch some movies and have a delicious home cooked meal. We decided to watch Wall-E on Saturday night...wouldn't recommend it though, once was enough to see it.

After church and lunch on Sunday, Kathryn and I packed up and came back to Athens. It was a great weekend being at home and spending time with Kathryn and my parents. I am so grateful to have parents that I LOVE to spend time with and love having friends over to enjoy their company too. And now back to the routine week...but I will try my best to post some more this week! I'll be babysitting Charlotte tomorrow, so I'll be sure to take some pictures of my precious niece.

You probably already know...

I was thinking about how AMAZING this weekend was and how glad that I took pictures to document all of the fun that I had....but when I thought about it, probably 90% of those that read my blog were apart of making my weekend great. Nevertheless, here is a recap of why this weekend was so wonderful!

Since it was so frigid on Friday (around 10 degrees--brrrr), I didn't quite make it to my Friday class. This all worked out for the best because then I got to pack up and get on the road towards Chattanooga!! (Stopping at home in Marietta for a free lunch of course...) Kasey and I had perfect timing and made it up the mountain around the same time. We (Kasey, Alex Walker, and myself) spent sometime catching up before going to the Harwoods with Forrest to have some delicious lasagna for dinner and homemade apple pie for dessert. It was such a blessing to spend time with the Walkers and the Harwoods--the food was great and the company was even greater. :) The 3 of us girls stayed up and chatted for a couple of hours before heading to bed. And then we woke up to a yummy, homecooked breakfast thanks to Mrs. Walker. I'm grateful for the friendship that I have gained from having Alex as my co in 2007 and so glad that Kasey and I got to spend lots of time with Alex.
After leaving the Walkers, Kasey and I had lunch at McAlister's with Emma McCallie. Emma was one of Kasey's campers from her first summer at CVP and she recieved the "I'm Third" Award. For those of you that don't know what the "I'm Third" Award is, it is something that the counselors vote on each week for the camper that clearly displays putting God first, others second, and themselves third (hence the name...I'm Third). Emma is one of those really special girls that is soooo mature for her age that you are just in awe of her. It was so great to spend time with her, and I know Kasey was especially excited. Once we caught up and cleaned our plates, Kasey and I got to go and see Jason Lawhorn's new house!!! It will be a fun (and hard!) project and they have made some great progress for having worked on it for less than a week.

We decided it was time to let them get some more work done without us under their feet, so Kasey and I headed to the Geyer's house. We meant to only stop by so that Emily could enjoy some time off between her parents leaving and us coming, but we started talking....and you know how girls are--once we start talking, there's no chance of us stopping any time soon! But as always, spending time with Emily was great. David and Keith were working on the "man room" upstairs, so we heard some banging and clamoring overhead, but they were definitely making progress. After a few hours of chit-chatting, Kasey, Em, and I went over to la casa de Cleland for some hamburgers and all of the sides to go with it....and more snickerdoodles than we'd care to mention. haha! After stopping by Petsmart to get some last minute stuff for Harley's arrival, we headed back to the Geyer's to sit outside until David came home with the key....so we took pictures to pass the time!! We had to try really hard to fit all 4 of us in the picture and I thought this one was pretty silly :) When we made it inside to the heat (and the fireplace) we got our first experience of Settler's of Catan---LOVED IT!!! Even with my bad luck, I enjoyed the game...and Anna's commentary. ("This game is just like soccer")

David made some pancakes for the crew before going to Calvary Chapel that morning. Kasey and I decided that we needed some pictures to document our visit together while we were all dressed up for church. After lunch, Kasey, Todd, and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings for some lunch....and watching the UGA vs. UK basketball game that was talked about the majority of the time we were lunching. (I could have cared less, so I stared off into space for quite some time haha) I got to see Harley just for a bit (I regret not taking a picture of him---SOOOO PRECIOUS!!) before meeting Kirby for Starbuck's!! :) She was in Marietta for the weekend because Daniel had to work a lot so she got to stop in Chattanooga for some sister time!! :) I love my sister so much and was so grateful for the quick hour we got together.

I went back to Marietta on Sunday night, and as always, I loved the quiet evening at home with mom and dad. Today was especially a treat because after a year and a half of being so close, Becca Hart and I finally had the chance to spend time together!! We met in the middle to have some Applebee's and ended up staying there talking for 3 1/2 hours!!! Obviously, the conversation was great and I am really looking forward to a chance spend more time with her sometime in the near future. And right now, my roomies and I had dinner with Elizabeth Cox, who used to live with Kathryn and I sophomore year in the house. What a great way to finish off a WONDERFUL weekend!!!

I know that this blog was super long, but I didn't feel like I could leave anything out because this weekend was just too wonderful! I am so grateful for another chance to spend the weekend in Chattanooga, especially with my best friend Kasey! I am so blessed to have the friends that I do in Chattanooga and loved the time that I get to spend with all of you!!

Sarah Guin's Great Idea

So, as most of my blogging friends know (because we basically all read each other's blog...it's like a blogging cult), Sarah Guin came up with a wonderful idea!! She's blogging about all of her blogger friends and how she knows them! What a great idea! The past few days, Sarah has been posting blogs like crazy, especially since she reached 100 blog posts a couple of days ago. But because of this, I didn't realize until a few days after that fact that she had blogged about me!! haha Check out Sarah Guin's blog. She's such a wonderful friend, and like I've told her and many others many times, hopefully I will be seeing her a lot more after I graduate! :) (113 days, by the way!)

Just stuff??

I feel that now that I'm back at school, I should have interesting topics to write about on my blog....but I just don't! For the week that I've been back in Athens and my last semester is officially underway, I can tell that it's going to be a great last semester. This past weekend, I was so blessed to go on a Crossroads Leadership Retreat. The one night away was a great way to set my mind and heart for God on His mission for me this semester. The fellowship with the small group of 50 that were there was something that made an impact on my heart, but what stuck out to me the most were the Thoms. The Thom family opened up their beautiful, three story lake house to 50+ loud, rambunctious college kids and even cooked us breakfast and dinner!!

Vicky Thom said something to welcome us that really made an impact on me; she said "Do whatever you want to this house--this is God's house. My husband and I built this house for students to come and love the Lord, and if things break, oh well, we'll buy another one. It's just stuff." Wow, it's just stuff?! I think if I need to remind myself to think like that, that whatever I have here on this earth is GOD'S, not mine, but HIS. What a great reminder that was for me. It can be so easy to get caught up in the "stuff" and to become envious of what others have or prideful of what I do have. In 1 Thessalonians 2:4, it says "We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts." What a wonderful reminder that we ought to strive for God's perfect will, not the unsteady, selfish things that we think that others want us to own or be proud of, but to be proud of the God that we love and what he has blessed us with.

"Let him who boasts boast in the Lord." --1 Corinthians 1:31 Not in the stuff...but HIM. :)

TAG--you're it!!

Since I've been tagged by 2 wonderful girls, I figure it's my turn to jump on the band wagon...
Here are the rules:
1) Choose the 4th folder where you store your pictures on your computer.
2) Select the 4th picture in the folder.
3) Explain the picture.
4) Tag 4 people to do the same. No cheating (cropping, editing, etc.)
HAHA So I literally laughed out loud when I found out that this was the picture to post. This picture is from my first annual CVP Christmas Party. This was after working my first of many wonderful summers at camp and the Towns Family hosted the Christmas Party for all the staff to get together at their house for yummy food and hilarious presents. Each person on staff brings a white elephant gift that usually lead to lots of laughter. This is the infamous Rod Stewart circa 1988 that has been passed around and I'm not too sure who had the wonderful blessing of calling this their own....but I really hope that they own it proudly and are hanging it in their house! haha Only at the Vesper Point Christmas party..... :)

And now for my tags....
1) Todd Phillips-because I'm pretty sure you were the giver of this poster
2) Alex Walker-since I've heard your husband mention this glorious poster a time or two
3) Reilly Liner-you would be someone that I could see regifting a great poster like this
4) Becca Hart-because I'm pretty sure that's your face in the bottom corner of this picture :)

Ready, set, GO!

Back to school, Back to school

I'm sure a handful of you have heard about my CRAZY semester last semester when I briefly went insane and decided to take 21 hours. This semester, slightly less crazed, I am taking 16 hours, 3 of which are an independent study (which I told myself I would do when I sat down at the computer, but decided to blog instead). But today, January 8th 2009, is officially my last first day of classes. I am taking all rights in bragging about this because this time last year I was undecided in my major and never thought that I would ever reach the status of "College Graduate". But after tons and tons of prayer, plenty of tears from stress, and talking to my friends and family, after 2 other majors having flopped, I landed on Child and Family Development. So, my first day of classes last Spring semester, I went to the CHFD advisor and almost immediately, my decision was confirmed. All of the right classes opened up and I LOVED my new classes, the professors, and the material that we were covering. Granted, if you ask me how much I love all of the things I just listed about halfway through the semester, you might get a different response. But, on the whole, I have had a complete turn around in my attitude towards my academia. All of these things fell into place thanks to God who opened doors for me that I didn't even realize that were there. And all because of this, I am 4 short months away from graduating!!

Let the countdown begin for my Graduation: 120 days (4 months from tomorrow!!)

A blissful break spent with my nose in a book

A new year is officially here and about to start moving at full speed when classes pick up again (and for the last time--EVER!!!). Although my break has been far from what most would call exhilarating, it was exactly what I needed. I'm pretty sure I did everything on my "To Do" List except for the visit to Chattanooga and a visit from some Chattanoogians, Hannah Card and Ellen Huffaker. But, I have a feeling that I'll be up to Chattanooga plenty of times this semester and more and more likely, this summer.

Something that I have especially enjoyed this break is a chance to read some books--for fun. Crazy thought, I know. I selfishly took whatever chance I could to steal away from others so I could delve into a book or two. Some days were spent sleeping in, reading in bed, changing locations only to read some more, eating on occasion, and of course, more reading. It. Was. Perfect. My favorite set of books that I've been reading over the break is The Chronicles of Narnia. The first reason I wanted to read the 7 books in the series was that I had never read them except the always classic and most popular, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Secondly, I really wanted to read the C.S. Lewis series from a Christian, biblical perspective. Granted, these books are on a 5th and 6th grade reading level so they make for easy reads, it has been so refreshing to be reminded of child-like faith and the excitement of believing it all. The greatest part of it all, even though the stories of Narnia are fantasy, the underlying theme of the story is true.

Aslan is portrayed so well as the strong, loving, fearless King of Narnia who works in his time, not the demands of the children from "the other world". The books describe Aslan's creation of Narnia, as he breaths life into the trees, the water, the light, and his people. In other books, Aslan comes out of his bliss at "the ends of the worlds" into the world that he created, Narnia, to guide them. And I love how Lewis portrays the "people" of Narnia. They are animals--not cute or put together, but gruff and unexpected creatures, but so loved by Aslan. Sounds kind of like us, doesn't it? Sinful people with ugly hearts, but so loved by our King that we can hardly begin to wrap our minds around it. Each book holds a different perspective, a different lesson, and a different way to view Christ's love for us through this world of fantasy and adventure created by C.S. Lewis. If you can't tell, I could talk about each book for hours on end...I really want to find out more of Lewis' perspective in his writings of this series because I know my insight is limited, but Ahhhh...I have absolutely loved the chance to read books that make you think and even better, broaden my view of our amazing Father and Creator.
